Below is an excerpt from the Tall Timbers cover story:

Matthew Knights’ 2009 plan to play Matthew Lloyd, Scott Lucas, Scott Gumbleton and Jay Neagle together in the forward line has Essendon fans licking their lips in anticipation.

Strategically it sounds dangerous, it sounds hard to stop and it sounds like a good idea.

But the question remains: does it sound too good to be true or, put simply, will it work?

The Captain has no doubt it will cause opposition clubs serious problems ... but only if done right.

“There will be times when other teams are getting on top of us or our ball use might not be that good and we are going to have to tinker with it,” Lloyd said.

“But I think playing four tall forwards will be very hard to match-up on because we’re all quite strong in our marking and kicking.

“Most teams only have two quality key defenders so this will also be a great way for Gumbleton and Neagle to develop because they won’t be having a Matthew Scarlett or Max Hudghton sit on them.

“They might get a third or fourth young defender so, while they are around six foot three and six foot five tall, they could both have someone who is a six-footer. Then we can stretch a defence because there are not many teams with four quality defenders and that’s where the advantage lies.”
